Georgia Coast Attractions

When you are in the coastal region of Georgia there are plenty of things to do and see. Of course you don’t want to miss all the beach activities and sun-bathing but you might plan a day or two for some other fun outings so you don’t miss all the other Georgia attractions.

Here are just a few of the many excursion possibilities:

There are numerous tours of Old Savannah from nighttime ghost tours to historic overview tours. You can even tour the gardens and cemeteries of the historic city. You can take an independent self-guided walking or driving tour or hop on a trolley tour and hear the amazing history of Savannah from a trained tour guide.

Located less than 18 miles off Sapelo Island, Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary is the largest near shore live-bottom reef in the southeast United States. Private boat companies operate fishing and diving trips to the Sanctuary.

The Mighty 8th Air Force Museum in Savannah is dedicated to preserving the stories of courage, patriotism and character of the men and women who served the 8th Air Force from WWII through the present.

Okefenokee Swamp Park is a National Wildlife Refuge. The swamp is nearly a half million acres in size and home to many plants and animals including bear, deer, otter, alligators and more. You can experience Okefekokee by boat tour or by railroad tour.

Fort Frederica was a defining place in Georgia’s history and is located on St. Simons Island. This is where the Spanish were defeated protecting Georgia as a British colony. Today the Fort is protected as a part of the National Park Service. There is a short film about the fort and you can take a self guided tour of the ruins.

The Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation Historic site in Brunswick, allows you to walk through a preserved antebellum home, watch a short film about the rice plantations history, and enjoy a nature trail.

Fort King George Historic Site in Darien, is the oldest English fort in Georgia. The reconstruction features a blockhouse, officers’ quarters, barracks, a guardhouse, moat, and palisades.
